Alibaba Cloud Announces Advancements in Porting Android to RISC-V Architecture

Alibaba Cloud, the data intelligence and digital technology arm of Alibaba Group, announces advances in porting basic Android functions to the RISC-V instruction set.

This proves the feasibility of using RISC-V-based Android devices in scenarios ranging from multimedia and signal processing to device interconnection and artificial intelligence.

Last year, the company announced that it had successfully ported core features like chrome browsing to Android 10.

Since the initial porting trial, additional efforts have been made to re-engineer previous to Android 12 in order to enable modules from third-party vendors to facilitate new functionsincluding audio and video playback, WiFi and Bluetooth, and camera operation.

To make it easier to implement these new functions, Alibaba Cloud has also enabled more system-level enhancements, such as core tool sets, third-party libraries, and SoC board support set on RISC-V. , thereby improving the robustness of the RISC-V ecosystem when running on the Android software stack.

Additionally, Alibaba Cloud has successfully tested TensorFlow Lite models on RISC-V, supporting AI functions such as image and sound classification and optical character recognition (OCR), a development that helps accelerate the incorporation of RISC-V into smart devices.

“Supporting Android12, Vendor Modules and the AI Framework on RISC-V based devices is another milestone we’ve achieved”said Jianyi Meng, Principal Director at Alibaba. “We look forward to continuing to contribute to the RISC-V community with our advanced technology and resources, and to fostering more innovation in the community with global developers. »
