Tobacco prices: is France already the European country that taxes cigarettes the most?

The Tax foundation, a Swiss NGO specializing in the analysis of tax policies, has looked into the issue of tobacco taxation across Europe. Thanks to data retrieved from the European Commission, she managed to draw up a ranking of the countries where the levels of taxation are the highest. If France is on the podium, in second place ahead of Finland, it is in Ireland that we observe the highest levels.

The following map (accessible via this link if it is not displayed correctly) allows you to view the amounts of taxes in force with our neighbours. The data presented here dates from the summer of 2022. Note that it is not a question of the selling price of the packages, since to obtain them, it is necessary in particular to add the amount of VAT as well as the margins of the manufacturers.
